Ometepe Island

Ometepe, which sits in the middle of the Lake of Nicaragua is the largest lake island in the world. Ometepe gets its name from the Nahuatl words : Ome, which signifies two and Tepetl or mountains, meaning two mountains. The island is made up of two volcanoes: Concepcion and Madera. Concepcion is an active cone shaped volcano located on the northwest part of Ometepe. Madera makes up the southeast portion of Ometepe. Madera is dormant and covered by rainforest. The two volcanoes are attached by a low lying isthmus which make up the entire island.

Ometepe measures 276 square kilometers, it is 31 kilometers long and 5-10 kilometers wide. It is home to about 37,000 people and may be the most tranquil spot on earth. Most of the islanders still make their living through farming the rich volcanic soil and fishing in Lake Nicaragua. The island has a rich history of pirates and legends.

Tourist Attractions in Ometepe Island

Hiking Maderas Volcano
The cloud forest covered Volcan Maderas can be a great hiking destination. It is recommended that you hire a local guide to help you get to the top of Maderas and down inside to view the crater lake.

Maderas is 1394 meters tall and supports a diverse rainforest environment. Howler monkeys, spider monkeys and many different species of insects and birds call Madera home. It is a long day of hiking so be prepared. If you are lucky enough to get a clear day, the views from the top of Madera are spectacular.

Hiking Concepcion Volcano
Concepcion is a perfect cone measuring 1610 meters in altitude. This makes it the world’s highest point on any fresh water lake island. It is possible to hike to the top of the symmetrical cone during most months of the year.

During the early part of the year it is far too windy to even attempt. The views from the top stretch all the way across the lake to the Pacific coast of Nicaragua.

Petroglyphs
Thousands of petroglyphs are strewn all over the island of Ometepe. Spirals, humans and local animals are common themes found on the petroglyphs. There are many tour companies which will point you in the right direction to find the petroglyphs.
